Talk Mobile Coverage

Talkmobile is an MVNO (mobile virtual network operator) with the same coverage as Vodafone. In fact, along with VOXI it’s actually owned and run by Vodafone too.

Originally launched by Carphone Warehouse in 2007, Talkmobile was subsequently sold to Vodafone in 2011, and since then it has served as a cheap, basic alternative to Vodafone’s main network.

Below, you’ll find more information on Talkmobile’s selling points, along with its types of coverage, its roaming terms, and tips on improving your Talkmobile signal.

What types of mobile coverage does Talkmobile have?

Like most UK networks, Talkmobile has 5G, 4G, and 2G coverage, and also like most UK networks it no longer offers a 3G service, as its parent company (Vodafone) has discontinued 3G, in favour of faster, more modern network technologies like 4G and 5G.

Given that almost all phones released in the last decade support 4G and most recent phones support 5G, this decision was probably for the best.

What are the selling points of Talkmobile?

Talkmobile has fewer selling points than a lot of networks, and certainly fewer than Vodafone, but that’s by design, as its main selling point is simply its affordable prices – which are achieved in part by keeping its plan selection simple and not packing in too many extras.

If you’re a new customer you can only choose a SIM Only plan, though you do have the option of either a flexible 30-day plan or a less flexible 12-month one that gives you more data for your money.

If you already have a Talkmobile SIM card then you also have the option of buying a phone on the network, though there aren’t many to choose from.

As far as other selling points go, its plans come with unlimited minutes and texts, 5G as standard, and there’s support for Wi-Fi Calling, 4G Calling, and tethering. You can also roam across the EU at no extra cost (up to a 5GB fair usage limit).

How can I check Talkmobile’s network status?

You can check your network status on Talkmobile’s network page. Just enter a postcode and it will tell you the coverage in that area along with any reported network issues.

If that shows coverage with no issues but you’re still having problems, then check Talkmobile’s Downdetector page to see if other people are reporting issues.

What can I do to improve signal?

Most networks – including Talkmobile – allow you to use Wi-Fi Calling, which means that if your phone is connected to a Wi-Fi network, then you can call and text over that – as well as receiving calls and texts. So even if you’re somewhere with no signal or with network problems, you can still make full use of your phone’s SIM card.

This is a great temporary solution, especially for issues you can’t solve yourself – such as if Talkmobile is reporting network problems that you’ll just have to wait to be solved.

However, while Wi-Fi Calling is always an option (assuming you’re somewhere with Wi-Fi), there will in some cases be things you can do yourself to improve your Talkmobile signal.

Sometimes, for example, it can be the phone you’re using that’s causing issues, so to test whether that’s the case – and try and resolve it – turn airplane mode on and then off again. That might clear up any signal problems, but if not then turn the phone off and on again.

If there’s still no change, then check for any software updates for your handset and install those, and if the battery is low give that a charge, as these things can all help too.

If none of that helps, then it might be your environment that needs addressing. Phone signals can struggle to penetrate some walls, so if you’re in a building you could try moving outside or even to another part of the building – though if it’s a building where you know you usually have signal, this is less likely to help.

Similarly, if you’re under thick tree cover, next to a temporary structure, or in another area where the signal could feasibly be blocked, it’s worth moving if possible, to see if that makes a difference.

And weather can also have an impact – if there’s a storm for example, this might cause signal problems, so wait it out and see if things improve.

If you can’t find a solution to signal problems, then give Talkmobile a call for assistance. You can reach the network on 5888 from a Talkmobile phone, or 0333 304 8064 from any other phone.

What other networks use Talkmobile’s network?

Vodafone, Asda Mobile, Lebara, and VOXI all have the same coverage as Talkmobile, as they all use Vodafone’s spectrum. So, if you want this coverage but with different pricing or extras to what Talkmobile has, then consider one of those networks.

Does Talkmobile have coverage abroad?

Talkmobile has agreements with numerous networks abroad to ensure you can stay connected when you’re on holiday or work trips.

Connecting when abroad should be seamless (assuming you have roaming enabled on your phone), and with Talkmobile, you can roam at no extra cost in 47 European destinations (up to a 5GB fair usage limit).
